While one mana is pretty easy to pay, the ward effect has the potential to keep your creature protected across several turns, or at least tax your opponent so they cant do multiple things in a turn
He is great in ramp decks where he gets Mana Vault, Voltaic Key, Mana Crypt and of course lands and he is great in combo decks where he gets Lions Eye Diamond, Pyrite Spellbomb, Chromatic Star and many of the previously mentioned cards too
Drawing more cards and draining your opponents life totals just adds insult to board wipe injury
This may remove a bit of the flavor of the deck , but it does significantly improve its performance in Magic: The Gathering Commander games
